Bar Mitzvah Invitations
Bar Mitzvah literally means "son of the commandment" and under the Jewish law, a Jewish boy automatically becomes a Bar Mitzvah upon the age of 13 years. Traditionally no ceremony is needed to confer his rights and obligations, but in our modern western society it is traditional to celebrate the event and Bar Mitzvah Invitations are sent out with anticipation to the party or reception where all family and friends participate.
Because it is not mentioned in the Talmud, this ceremony is considered a relatively modern innovation that comes from around a
century ago. Bar Mitzvah invitations feature your boy's name and may come in a variety of shapes, with embossed frames, engraved borders or stripped borders. As part of the Jewish tradition, many of them come with the Star of David, the Torah scroll or any other Jewish symbol, but those symbolic
items do not necessarily have to be used in your invitations.
As with any other invitations, Bar Mitzvah Invites have to be selected, ordered and sent out with plenty of time before the event, but the time in advance depends on the family traditions and how much they preserve the Bar Mitzvah concept, and basically requires the description of this event, the name of the Bar Mitsva, the events to which the receiver is being invited to, the date and time of the event, as well as the place where the Bar Mitzva will be held and the name of the hosts.
The Bar Mitzvah is the celebrant's first "aliyah", when he is called up to the Torah to recite a blessing over the weekly reading during Shabbat Services. This is the Saturday shortly after the boy celebrates his 13th birthday.
